New Apple Profile of Construction Consultants Using the iPad

I just noticed last night that Apple put up a new “iPad in Business” profile – this one features Crescent Construction Services, with offices in North Carolina and Connecticut.

Industrial clients such as Southern Company and major retailers like Food Lion and Harris Teeter turn to Crescent Construction Services for “commissioning,” an integrated set of inspections into a building’s core systems, from drains to roof. CCS flags any design or construction problems in both new and existing structures, and verifies that these buildings are ready for the final stages of development.

Together, iPad and iPhone are the perfect tools for the job. CCS’s inspectors, project managers, and other staff can rapidly collect information for their comprehensive reports, transmit the data from job site to office, and convert it into final documentation for clients.

CCS custom-built this Filemaker-based app for reporting field conditions

What I find most interesting is that the firm’s vice president, Julian Clayton, championed the adoption of the iPad for the firm, and also is developing apps. The company’s first offering is a punchlist app, fittingly called, Punchlist.

Clearly, this 20-person construction consulting company is going places. Clayton explains that the adoption of new technology is based entirely on the desire to offer better quality of service to their clients.

Congratulations CCS!

Construction Consultant and Deck/Waterproofing Contractor Uses Technology To Achieve More From Less

I just posted an interview with Bill Leys (@Deck_Expert) over at AECforensics.com. Leys is a deck and waterproofing contractor on the central coast of California (hence the name of his company, Central Coast Waterproofing) that also provides expert witness testimony in construction defect cases, and offers consulting services to owners regarding decks, deck coverings and waterproofing.

He is also a prolific blogger, is active on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. For those of you that question the value of social media, check this out:

Search for “deck expert”

I interviewed Bill because I found out he was using Square to process credit card payments from clients on the spot.

I think Leys provided a lot of valuable information in the interview, so I encourage you to check it out, even if you aren’t interested in construction, waterproofing, or decks.

Condé Nast’s iOS app developer profiled by Ars Technica

Ars Technica is owned by Condé Nast. Condé Nast recently developed some awesome apps for iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad for some of their magazines. (I love the Wired app!) Jacqui Cheng sat down with the developer behind those apps to get a sense of what goes into repurposing content for today’s leading content platform.

If you’re not a writer or editor for one of Condé Nast’s famed publications, it’s easy to get lost inside the publishing giant. One unsung hero who labors behind the scenes is Robert “Tolar” Haining, an Ars reader and Technical Architect who has been instrumental in bringing Condé’s offerings to the iPhone and iPad. “The first app I ever worked on was Epicurious, but the original was just a rudimentary version that I wrote on my own time back in 2008,” Haining told Ars. “At the time, we were working on Facebook apps, so I wrote the Epicurious iOS prototype in the meantime just to show it could be done, and suddenly the ball got rolling.”

Share on Google Reader bookmarklet (for iPad/iPhone) – Sign ‘O’ The Times

Shared by BLHill

After scourging the Google for a solution, I found this block of code (finally). So create a new bookmark for your iPad (e.g. from this page), then go to edit bookmarks, edit the title of your bookmark and then edit the actual link. Copy paste the code below:
javascript:var%20b=document.body;var%20GR________bookmarklet_domain=’http://www.google.com';if(b&&!document.xmlVersion){void(z=document.createElement('script'));void(z.src=’http://www.google.com/reader/ui/link-bookmarklet.js’);void(b.appendChild(z));}else{}

Is Aperture Coming to the iPad (and iPhone/iPod Touch)?

Patently Apple’s Jack Purcher reports that a recent patent filed by Apple lends credence to the idea that Apple’s photo management application, Aperture, may make its way to the iPad.

A number of patents have surfaced over the last two years concerning light pens and apps moving to touch screens. While one of the first detailed patents surfaced in 2009 in relation to business forms, we’ve since seen some serious advances in Apple’s pursuit of the Smart-Pen including a huge leap in the field of graphics pens. It's the latter that's interesting in light of Apple's latest patent revelation that Aperture is coming to touch displays including handhelds like the iPad. It may even come to future desktops and laptops that offer touch displays, according to Apple. An advanced graphics pen would be great for fast photo touch-ups and appreciated by photographers using Aperture on-the-go. Who knows, maybe Apple is even gearing this up for future hybrid systems. Time will tell.
